                                                             QUESTION TAG

Question-tags are tail questions that are affixed at the end of a sentence. Its function is to assert the spoken information or to get approval.

In question-tags, auxiliary or auxiliary verbs are needed. Auxiliary types include:

1.      Be auxiliary
1.is, am, or are (for present tense)
2.was or were (for past tense)

2. Do auxiliary
1.do and does (for present tense form)
2.did (for past tense)

3. Have auxiliary
1.have and has (for present perfect tense form)
2.had (for past perfect tense)

4. Capital auxiliary: can, may, must, should, could, might

Shall and Will for future tense form

A.    Form of Question Tag

1. Negative Question Tag

Auxiliary + not + pronoun?

(Pronoun is the pronoun of the subject in a positive sentence)

Example:

~       isn’t it?  ~      aren’t you? ~       aren’t they? ~       wasn’t she? ~       weren’t you?

~        don’t you?  ~        doesn’t he? ~        don’t they? ~        didn’t you? ~        didn’t they?

~       hasn’t she?  ~      haven’t you? ~       hadn’t he? ~       can’t you? ~       shouldn’t I?

2.      Positive Question Tag

Auxiliary + pronoun?

(Pronoun is the pronoun of the subject in a positive sentence)

Example:

~       is it?  ~       are you? ~       are they? ~       was she? ~       were you?

~        do you?  ~        does he? ~        do they? ~        did you? ~        did they?

~       has she?  ~       have you? ~       had he? ~       can you? ~       should I?

B. FORMULA

1. Positive Sentence, negative Question tags?

· Heni is a dancer, is not she?

Exception: I am smart, are not I?

You like milk, don’t you?

·             Andien went to Bali, didn’t she?

·             They will go to Bandung, won’t they?

·            Agnes comes from Italy, doesn’t she?

·             This is your house, isn’t it?

·             Those are your cars, aren’t they?

·             There is a party tonight, isn’t there?

·             Everything is okay, isn’t it?

·             Everyone did homework, didn’t they?

C. Notes

1. About Subject
The QT subject comes from the subject of the sentence in front of it.
The QT (Question-Tags) subject must be in pronoun form, that is:

I, You, We, They, He, She, It.
• The pronoun tag for this / that = it
• The pronoun tag for these / those = they
• The pronoun tag for the subject Everyone, Everybody, Someone, Somebody, No one, and Nobody are They.
• The pronoun tag for Everything, Something, and Nothing is It.
• Sentences with there + be, then there are used in the tags.
• If the sentence uses "I am ... .." (positive sentence), then the tag should be not I.

2. Auxiliary shapes
• Auxiliary on QT must correspond to the auxiliary in the sentence in front of it.
• Auxiliary + notes should be abbreviated:

Isn’t  Aren’t Wasn’t Weren’t Doesn’t Don’t Didn’t Hasn’t Haven’t

• Nothing, nobody, no one, never are words that mean negative, then the tag should be positive.
3. Another Tag Shape
   
     I. Command sentence
Example:
• "Open the door, will / would / can / could you?"
• "Take your book, will / would / can / could you?"
• "Pass me the spoon, will / would / can / could you?"

     II. Call sentence
Example:
• "Let's go, shall we?"
• "Let's get to work, shall we?"
• "Let's discuss it, shall we?"

    III. Offer sentence
Example:
• "Have a seat, will not you?
• "Have a drink, will not you?
